“Since July 2021 she has travelled over 9,000km across 12 countries representing all children fleeing war, violence and persecution and each with their own story, Little Amal’s urgent message to the world is 'Don’t forget about us.'“

This new play was written and directed by Pink Flowers. Pink along with Chris Hammett started a theater company called Falconworks. They were located in Red Hook, a neighborhood in western Brooklyn, New York. Pink is one of my favorite creators, a champion of Theater of the Oppressed. The subjects that Pink leans into are so juicy. They are all stories we need to hear. Many of their productions employed neighbors along with actors to perform the telling of these stories. One section of I Migration was a conversation between historical figures; Leif Erikson, Columbus, Zheng He, and Saint Brendan. They were all on the high seas discovering new lands. The moment I read this scene I remembered a time when I saw actors using their own heads on top of the puppet’s body. This piece was screaming for this type of visual. There was not much I had to do to convince Pink that this scene needed body puppets with large cardboard ships around the actors!

PUPPET PROCESS

  • And so many voices that need to be put together to land on the right kind. Also the puppeteers' needs should be thought about. But trying to figure out the mechanics of it is what draws me in! Making patterns, thinking through the internal connections and being able to change something – using my critical thinking skills!
