Wow! In 2020 I was asked to production design a full length medieval fantasy film with some of my favorite people, how can it get any better?
Well, unable to find enough castles here in New York we moved the film to Scotland. I started working on this film at the moment of its inception. Ah, creating worlds is what I was born to do! The script was written by Greg Steinbruner who also plays the Man in the story and the Witch’s role was played by his wife Tami Stronach. She played the Childlike Empress in 1984 The NeverEnding Story. And this was her return to the big screen. They raised several million dollars for this film, by far not the amount spent on films today. But, hey this is a true indy film having no involvement or endorsement from major movie studios, television networks or fancy distribution companies.
One of my favorite parts was creating the witch hut. I sat in the scottish airbnb for days filling jars with potions which consisted of floating herbs in scottish children’s thick colorful drinks. Sealing the jars with a waxed dipped hand onion dyed linen wrapped with hemp cord and finished with a wax seal. I hand dyed paper to create thousands of written potions. And for days I dried dozens of flowers and fruit that would be used in her witchy healing remedies.
In May 2024 I went to the film premiere in London and in July I was at the film premiere in New York. That weekend the film was shown in 80 different states. So fun to see it on the big screen with a box of popcorn!

PRODUCTION PROCESS
-
I do a gentle read, not getting too caught up on details. I then set up a deep dive conversation with the director and screenwriter. I love to hear them tell me the story before I do a focused reading. I learn as much as I can from them about the characters and locations. The internal dialogs the characters are having. I also like to find out what books they have read, what visual research they have pulled and what music they are listening to that feels like the story. This all helps to create the back stories so the environments are not simply decorated but they look lived in!
