AFTER SPENDING 18 YEARS WORKING IN A FACTORY
making ECUs (electronic control units) in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Deb O decided to go to Marquette University where she received her undergraduate degree in theatre design with a minor in studio art and art history. She then went on to receive her MFA in Theatre Design at Yale School of Drama.
Deb O's extensive scenography training and range of experiences as well as her background in folk art, dance, gymnastics, clowning, puppetry, found object art, sculpture and mask making have lent themselves to innovative approaches to the creation of unique theatrical events. Deb has enjoyed collaborations with theater directors Tamilla Woodard, Alex Harvey, Curt Columbus, Stephen Brackett, GT Upchurch, Melissa Kievman, Brian Mertes, Greg Stienbruner, Lee Sunday Evans, Mia Rovegno, Jess K Smith, Flordelino Lagundino and dance-theatre makers Dan Safer of Witness Relocation, Tami Stronach Dance, Sam Pinkleton, and Diane Vanderhei and Tom Thoreson of Footworks Dance Company. She has also designed numerous, memorable special events and exhibits.
With director Brian Mertes and The Lake Lucille Project, Deb O has devised and created large-scale, environmental designs for day-long performances of each of Chekhov's great works since 2007. With playwright/producer Beau Willimon and directors Brian Mertes and Alex Harvey, the project moved to a giant warehouse in Sunset Park in Brooklyn, New York, for an epic environmental staging of Lanford Wilson's Balm In Gilead. In the Summer of 2014, the Lake Lucille Company embarked on its next project, the making of a film I Am A Seagull, in which Deb O was the production designer. In the summer of 2019 she traveled with the film to the Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival in the Dutch city of Groningen. In the summer of 2016/17 Deb O created the environment for the next project The Cherry Orchard. The project moved on to Three Sisters which completed the canon.
She has designed a number of new works and new musicals, such as Lacy Project, Jihad the Musical, The Daughters, The Deepest Play Ever, F%#king Up Everything, Bubble Boy, Fable, Magical History Tour, Light A Dark Comedy, A Socks Fables, The Material World, Other Orbits, and Riddle of the Trilobites. In Time Out New York, The Material World was chosen to be one of the top 10 shows of 2012. She has been in the rehearsal room helping develop an original play — Light: A Dark Comedy. This new project was workshopped at the New Victory.
Deb O is a founding member and co-director of Artbarn, 2013 to 2017. Artbarn is a collective of innovative artists from across disciplines and around the country who gather for an annual residency to collaboratively generate original site-specific work. The first three new works, Home Stretch, This is a Ghost House, and The Circle, were all produced in various turn of the century buildings on the Byrdcliff estate near Woodstock, New York. Artbarn collaborated with Satori Group in Seattle, Washington, at the Georgetown Steam Plant to produce their newest play We Remain Prepared. They have been working on the project for a year of bi-coastal devising, which will culminate in an intensive residency in Seattle in which both companies will live and work together. They also taught a site-specific class to theater students in Tacoma, Washington.
Deb O’s work in film has lead her to full length films as well as several shorts. The short films are Bad Dad, Little One, A Poem and a Mistake, the award winning short Muscle, and Jolly Friends Forever More. She also designed a music video Half Of It. The first full length film is I Am A Seagull followed by Man and Witch: A Dance of a Thousand Steps, which took her to Scotland where the land was full of castles, parks and cathedrals. The film premiered in London June 2024 and in New York July 2024. The film stars Tami Stronach as the Witch (who’s known for the role of the little princess from Neverending Story) and her husband Greg Strun as the Man (who also wrote the film). This 80’s inspired grassroots film has been near and dear to her heart. She has been riding this roller coaster with Tami and Greg giving support through the whole process. Now she cannot wait for the rest of the world to see it.
Deb O is a member of the Wingspace design collective. She taught design at NYU's Tisch Playwrights Horizons Theater School for eight years. She also taught at Marquette University, Fordham University, Fairmont University, Meredith College, Hunter College, Simson College, NTI National Theater Institute, Connecticut College, Wild Wind Performance Lab and the Met. In 2016, she was invited to USITT to speak about site-specific theater. Deb O is a recipient of Yale's Jay and Rhonda Keene Award, has been featured twice at the Prague Quadrennial, and has received numerous American College Theater Festival Awards including Best Designer of the Year. In 2013, her site specific piece at an abandoned grain factory in Red Hook, New York, was chosen as one of the 10 best theater productions in New York. She is also a member of the Union Scenic Artist Union Local 829.
